What Is Actually Wrong With a Two Handle Shower Valve?
Nothing, until somebody flushes a toilet while you are standing in it. Two handle valves have no mechanism for holding the mix steady, so a pressure change on either line goes straight through to the shower head. You get the shock or the scald. Everyone in that house already knew to shout before running a tap anywhere else.
These were the original chrome cross handles on separate escutcheons, set in the small speckled square tile that dates a good deal of the housing stock around Doctor Phillips. Look at the grout below and to the right of each handle. There is a faint green cast running down it. That is what a slow weep at a stem packing leaves on white grout over a few years, and it is easy to walk past until you are three feet away with a light on it.

How Do You Convert to a Single Handle Without Retiling?
With one valve set between the two old openings and an escutcheon wide enough to cover both. That oval plate is the entire trick, and choosing it is the first decision on the job rather than the last.
The wall has to open to get the old valve out and the new body in. On a tiled shower the question is never whether the work can be done. It is what the finished wall looks like afterward. Setting the new valve on the centerline between the two old holes is what puts the conversion plate over both scars at once. Cut in the wrong place by an inch and you are hunting for tile that stopped being made decades ago, in a glaze nobody has matched since.
Where there is a closet or a hall wall directly behind the shower, the cleaner route is in from the back, because drywall is a far friendlier patch than tile. That option was not available here.
So the tile came off in a controlled square, and plate size decided how big that square could be. New stubs, a new drop ear for the shower arm, then the trim, and the only thing the homeowner sees is a single lever where two handles used to be.
What Does a Pressure Balancing Valve Actually Do?
It keeps the ratio of hot to cold steady when the pressure on one side drops. Inside the cartridge sits a spool that shifts to throttle the other side by the same amount, and it moves fast enough that you never feel the correction happen. That is the difference people actually notice after a conversion. It has less to do with the handle count than with what happens when the washing machine fills. Anti scald protection on tub and shower valves is a requirement in modern plumbing codes, and pressure balancing valves are the usual way it gets met. Whether that applies to a like for like replacement in an existing bathroom depends on the scope of the work, so confirm the current requirement with the Orange County building department for your specific job rather than assuming.
Every one of these valves also carries a rotational limit stop, a small adjustable ring behind the handle that caps how far toward hot the lever can travel. It arrives at a factory setting that knows nothing about your water heater. So we set it on site. If your shower has never been comfortable at the top of its travel, that ring is very often the reason, and it is a five minute adjustment rather than a new valve.
Is It Worth Converting, or Should You Just Rebuild the Old Valve?
Rebuild if the only symptom is a drip and the parts are still available. Convert if the valve is weeping inside the wall, if the shower scalds, or if the bathroom is getting redone anyway.
A rebuild is stems, seats, springs and packing, and on a valve that is otherwise sound it is a genuinely good repair at a fraction of the cost. What it cannot do is add anti scald protection, because a two handle valve has no mechanism to provide it. So a household with small children, or with an older relative who cannot move quickly out of a hot stream, is usually better served by the conversion even when the old valve could be saved.
One more thing before you decide. If the stems in that wall have been weeping for years, take a proper look at the supply piping while the wall is open, because a shower valve is a poor place to discover the pipe behind it is on its last legs.
